Most musicians I know don’t just play music on Saturday night. They play music every day. They are always fiddling around, letting the notes lead them from one place to another. Taking still photographs is like that. It is a generative process. It pulls you along.
Make Music With Your Life
Make music with your life
cuts every deepday madness
Into jewels that you wear
Carry 16 bars of old blues
everywhere you go
walk thru azure sadness
Like a guitar player
A photograph is usually looked at—seldom looked into. The experience of a symphony—appreciation of the broad melodic line, while important, is by no means all. The wealth of detail, forms, values—the minute but vital significances revealed so exquisitely by the lens—deserve exploration and appreciation. It takes time to really see a fine print, to feel the almost endless revelation of poignant reality which, in our preoccupied, haste, we have sadly neglected.
For me, the creation of a photograph is experienced as a heightened emotional response, most akin to poetry and music, each image the culmination of a compelling impulse I cannot deny…I am deeply aware of my spiritual connection with it. In my life, as in my work, I am motivated by a great yearning for balance and harmony beyond the realm of human experience, reaching for the essence of oneness with the Universe.
Words move, music moves
Only in time; but that which is only living
Can only die. Words, after speech, reach
Into silence. Only by form, the pattern,
Can words or music reach
The art of mastering life is the prerequisite for all further forms of expression, whether they are paintings, sculptures, tragedies, or musical compositions.
We write, we make music, we draw pictures, because we are listening for meaning, feeling for healing. And during the writing of the story, or the painting, or the composing or singing or playing we are returned to that open creativity which was ours when we were children. We cannot be mature artists if we have lost the ability to believe which we had as children. An artist at work is in a condition of complete and total faith.
